Club Sessions Explained

Club sessions are held both in the mornings and evenings to suit everyone’s busy schedule.

Mornings sessions are held on a Tuesday & Thursday at 7am and Saturday at 9am. The Tuesday morning meeting point alternates between Chessington North Parade and Churchfields depending on the time of year. On Thursday mornings we meet at the North Start pub & Saturdays we meet at Churchfields.

Monday and Thursday evening sessions meet at different locations. On a Monday evening the meeting point alternates between Horton Golf Course in the Summer and The North Star pub car park in the winter. Thursday sessions are our most popular meeting at 7pm in the North Star car park in the winter or King Edward recreation ground in the summer. Changes in location are communicated in the ‘at a glance page’ of this website or the club newsletter. The changes in location are made to take advantage of the longer daylight hours and all the amazing green spaces that we have access to in Chessington. If you didn’t know that Chessington is green you will be in for a treat when you join us.

We also hold strength and speed sessions on a Tuesday & Wednesday evenings, see below for more details.

Chessington Unity Running League, a selection of races (see our CURL event page) where just entering will earn you points. You will earn more points if you achieve personal bests (speed or distance) and if you are the first CURC across the finish line. The male and female with the highest points each receive a trophy at the awards night. The 2nd and 3rd places get a coaster. If you complete 5 races in a season you are eligible to be entered into the club ballot for the London Marathon. The CURL league fixtures are races and not always suitable for our walkers, however we are a member of the MABAC league that does have walking races at each fixture, and we actively encourage you to join us there.

MABAC is an interclub cross country league offering free league races throughout the year, and only open to member clubs and their guests. Chessington Unity was invited to join the MABAC league in 2025.  The name MABAC dates back to 1977 when the league was first set up by two runners one from Mathew Arnold School and the other from British Airways Corporation works in Weybridge (now British Aerospace). Hence MABAC.  Most are cross-country events held on Sunday mornings in some beautiful parts of the Surrey countryside and are very popular with club members and guests. The races are just over 8 km (5 miles) with a jogger and walking option of about 4 km (2.5 miles). We will get points for all members completing the events. Head to the MABAC page to see the point scoring system and how you can join. Or reach out to our MABAC Captains James or Emma.

James is Captain of our Men’s Cross Country team. He has been a keen runner for over 40 years – in fact since school, when apparently his favourite lesson was jog-graphy! Off-road is his preferred terrain, on which he has run distances ranging from 1km to 100km.

A monthly competition on the first Tuesday of each month where you race yourself (and others). The slowest runners leave first and faster runners last with the aim that everyone finishes at the same time. You get points for crossing the line and then 10-points if you cross first (5-points if it’s your first ever HandiCURC) down to 1-point if you are 10th across the line. More points are awarded for seasonal and personal bests. You can join for all events or just one, but it’s no fun if you join none!

A free speed session for all abilities. This is typically held on the second and fourth Tuesday to improve speed and stamina. This is a really fun session for all abilities and will help you get to the top of the HandiCURC leader board. Ask for Kev or look out for the Return of the NUBS Facebook page to see the location as it can change on occasions and can be subject to change dependent on availability of run leader . What does NUBS actually mean? You have to turn up to find out!

Kev is an ultra runner and the mastermind behind the Zero2Hero new beginner to 5km training program. What Kev doesn’t know about running is not worth knowing.

We meet third Wednesday of every month at the Harrier Centre in Ewell. It costs £4:00 to enter and then you will be led in a session to help improve speed and stamina. All abilities welcome.

A free core strength training session for runners. Sessions are face-to-face every Wednesday at Buckland School from 6pm or on Zoom throughout the week. Contact Bev for more details.

Bev Gow is an English Athletics Qualified Coach in Running Fitness. A keen plodder, open water swimmer, Club Coach, CURC Run Leader and CURC Club Captain.
